Completely compression testing
Works well. But minor improvements would help. Tested it on a 698cc smart roadster engine. Had to buy the step down, as this engine uses small spark plugs. Approx 150 psi over the three cylinders. Means the engine is good. Test took 15mins once the petrol pump fuse was removed and HT lead. Results mean my Turbo may need replacing... cheaper than an engine rebuild! The step down screwed into the guage but would some times get stuck in the block when you unwinded the compression guage leaving the step down behind. Perhaps a formed hex nut on the step down would allow a socket to remove it from the block. This happened on all three cylinders. Only fault I found. Broke after 4 minutes.
Low quality. The actual screw on adapter is not 14mm, so you have to screw the main shaft in. The rubber seal shreds and you gave to use a monkey wrench to tighten it. Glasses and top just fell out in my hand, it's not even secured on. Spend a bit more money, get something better. Works well under pressure!
A well designed and well made precision measuring instrument. It is robust in construction and provided me with a low-cost means of testing a salvaged outboard motor. The dual scale shows pressure in Bar units and PSI units and also has 3 shaded zones which indicate pressures for general guidance - useful if there are no specific figures available for your engine. A great bit of kit at a sensible price.
Bought to test the compression on my Honda Accord 1.8i 1999, as its getting a bit long in the tooth. The spark plugs on the car are very deep seated, but turning the rubber hose, on the compression tester, by hand, gave an apparently perfect seal. I removed all spark plugs and the fuel and ignition fuses, and screwed in the compression tester, to each cylinder in turn. Cranking the engine took the needle on the tester up to a reading within a few seconds. My readings were 200 psi, 200, 210 and 220. I thought these appeared slightly on the high side, as needle was getting close to the red on the dial, but I have nothing to compare them with and was very pleased that there is not too much variation between the cylinders.
