I am an above average photographer- not a pro mind you. I own a Canon 100mml macro and a 100mm Zeiss macro in addition to the one I just bought. The Canon 180mm L is super sharp and allows me more working distance from my subjects making it easier to adjust the lighting the way I want it. In my opinion the images are crisper and the color rendition is better than with the Canon 100mm macro that I own. The lens is heavy, but I use it on a tripod so it doesn't affect what I do. If I were to carry the lens on my camera it would not be comfortable. I imagine that most users would want to use this lens on a tripod set up for added stability. I would definitely buy this lens again. I use it on my Canon 7d and 5d III. Art

I have wanted a macro lens for about 5yrs now . When this deal came along. The lens is a canon ef 180mm f/3.5l usm macro lens . Although I have taken great photos with canon zoom lenses for my up close shots. I have always just been alittle disappointed in the super fine details .With this lens , not any more , and I can also use it as a regular zoom lens to get that little bit more detail that allows my photos look like the professionals , some of my friends all ready think my photos are as good as the pros. I took a photo of a ice sicle and sent it to my friends and family , and they were blowen away with the details that they never knew were in the making of an ice sicle . It is true for the really up close photos , you will have to use a tripod , or brace up against something to get that very sharp photo . But if your in to photographing the world up close , and not affraid to use a tripod , and even better , using a remote too . I can't imagine you not liking this lens . I even bought a new canon 7d camera to make all my lenses take better photos , which you can read about in my next review . Simi Pro Photographer TommyRead full review
I am an amateur photographer that use my images for graphic design work. Based on that, I needed equipment with superior image quality for my work. Canon's regular line of lenses are great; I have several that I use, but the "L" series is in a completely different ballpark! I have the EF-S 60mm f/2.8 that takes great macro shots, but I needed a longer lens that allows me to take macro shots from a further distance from the subject. This lens delivered in a big way. Not only in macro shots but even portraiture and telephoto! The f/3.5 blows out the background fairly well. Autofocus is fast, silent and internal!F/2.8 would have been nice like the EF 100mm macro but I guess the price would double! Image quality is unparalleled across the full spectrum. Only knock is the shallow depth of field at really, really close range. But that's inherent with all macro lenses. A bit pricey at $1k+ compared to other macro lenses but if you are looking for superior quality macro images for your Canon, there is no other lens I have found that even compares. You definitely get what you pay for! Aside from the sticker shock, you will not be dissapointed by this lens. Besides, you're getting an "L"!Read full review
it's amazing sharp, fast and bright. also quiet expensive, I know. but every penny is well spent. I have all 3 CANON macros 50mm,100mm, and this 180 . as professional I need to check often and eventually review my lenspark. the 180mm has about 30-40% more detail than the 100mm . UNBELIVABLE ! but remember it's a 180mm, so focusing must be done very carefully to not have bad surprises. even with f32 it's possible to make out of focus in macro range. it's only limit is, that's a long focal for some uses like portrait and similar. as pure macro lens it's the best money can buy. if you want to arrive to similar resultes with shorter focal lenghs, try the pentax 67 100mm macro (not 135mm) adapted . it's a miracle ! ...
The images are sharp from infinity to 1:1 and the 180mm focal length allows the user to have a good working distance. The tripod foot makes leveling the lens a breeze.
