This book is much more than a cook or history book It deals with everything connected to English food throughout the ages. First published in 1954, it has never been out of print. Dorothy Hartley was a 20th Century artist and writer who could be described as eccentric, living her life independently and following rules from what it seems today as a bygone age. Thoroughly recommended.

I really wanted a first edition but after the exposure on TV, the prices went through the roof and I settled for the paperback version which I bought. Exactly the same as the original which in fact has never been out of print since 1954.
Loving this book. Some hilarious observations. Some very eye opening recipes including some techniques so simple but exquisite. Buy it love it and change the easy you look at food.
