Superb Read - Easy Format - balance of human / scientific with a dose of reality !
Pretty much everything has been said about this book in other book reviews so I will not go into the detail, just Google the reviews it is all there. I will just add that personally I found the book a superb read. It follows a format which makes reading easy. If you are interested in the “nuts and bolts” of medicine / medical procedures combined with the human stories, this book gives you a feel for this. I found myself flicking back and forth to the drawings of the heart. Yes the book is a little repetitive in places, but heart ops are procedure based, it was fine. The book made me think about how fragile life can be and why we should seek to enjoy the lottery win every day. What I did find refreshing was Professor Westaby’s attitude to Political Correctness and willingness to ... These days I sense the NHS would rather let you die preferring to concentrate on getting the paperwork right. But, society has got what it deserves with its "wish washy" education of the young who evolve into positions of leadership that influence society; and the move to a US style litigious attitude (love the medical staff one minute when they save their life, next sue them because they can make money out of it). Sorry gone a bit of purpose here, but I did feel my hackles rising as I felt Professor Westaby’s frustration. Read the book and you will get a feel for the challenges faced. Really enjoyed the book, Recommended!

Superb story
Excellent true story of the problems encountered with various artificial heart devices and the multiple surgical procedures that were tried. Written by someone who was there at the time and did his utmost to get his patients back from the brink. Sometimes with success but sometimes a sad ending. Riveting reading .
