I already had a Nikon digital SLR and compact cameras, but neither were very good for close ups. I make jewellery and accessories and sell them online, and getting decent close up pics of small items was a problem. I used to sell cameras for a living, and I knew that the Finepix cameras had really good close up settings, so decided to see what was available on eBay. I settled for this model as I have a friend who uses it to photograph the beads she makes, so I know it's up the the job! Competition was stiff - several cameras came and went at prices higher than I was prepared to pay, but eventually I got what I wanted! I am delighted with it - close up shots are amazing. In 'normal' close up mode, you can get 4cm from the subject, in 'super macro' you can get to 1cm - brilliant! Naturally, it does other kinds of photography too, perfectly well, as long as you don't want the kind of incredible zoom facilities that some of Fuji's later bridge cameras have got. It's light, fits in my hand nicely, is quick to focus (unlike my nikon compact) and has all the creative mode and scene controls you could reasonably want (or remember how to use!). I have a little digital camera to put in my pocket if we go out for a run in the car. But we had a holiday to Scotland booked for our 29th wedding anniversary and I had been looking for a small digital camera for the wife, (I know... Not a bad swap) so that she could take her own photos. However, I had seen this Fujifilm FinePix S5700 for sale, but I had heard that because it takes 4 x AA Batteries that it would be quite expensive to run. However that has NOT been the case. It has taken just short of 300 photos on one set of Duracell's and they are still nearly at full charge. I have really put it to the test whilst away and I am VERY impressed with the way it works. The pictures that I have taken using the 10 times optical zoom are as crisp and clear as anything that I have seen in any magazine. It has anti-shake, auto flash, red eye reduction and a load more features to play with. NOW I can get the same quality photos that everyone else always seemed to get that I couldn't before. This is the camera that I will be taking with me when we go for a run out in future. It is so lightweight and easy to use too. YES I did get my wife her own small digital camera too.Read full review
Bought this camera for my wife as a replacement for her Samsung point and shoot. I have to say that she is over the moon with it. It's a great little camera if you want a step up the ladder from the pocket camera this has got to be an excellent contender! They can be picked up for a song compared with other cameras of this kind on ebay. Extremely good at low lights. Nice and light, loads of features. Display is a little bit grainy but that's a minor quibble really there's always the viewfinder which I prefer anyway. Not as good as my Panasonic Lumix, but the price does reflect this. Takes ordinary pen cell batteries which can be a blessing if you're out and about, if they go flat just replace with a spare set.
I learned photograpy using 35mm SLR cameras, and I've always found it easier to use an SLR-style viewfinder. But SLRs tend to be big and heavy; if you want to carry a camera all the time something a little smaller is better. That's what this camera, and other bridge cameras, are about - they're used like SLRs but lack a lot of the mechanical complications, which makes them lighter and smaller. The lens isn't removable but they have a good optical zoom range, which gives better results than digital zoom. I'd previously used a much earlier version, the Fuji Z2800, which had a 2 megapixel sensor and x6 zoom; the s5700 has a 7.1 megapixel sensor and x10 zoom, and gives excellent results under most circumstances. The drawback is that those 7.1 megapixels are crammed onto a comparatively small sensor chip compared to a full-featured digital SLR, which means that there can be weird interference effects sometimes. This can lead to slight purple fringing around areas of high contrast or widely different focus. It's only noticable if you really look for it, but it's there, expecially at the extreme telephoto setting. For this reason I've rated it 4 for picture quality, not 5, but unless you really need pro quality you needn't worry about it. Another thing that can be a problem if you're used to SLRs is that there's a short delay after each picture, about half a second while the image is processed, in which the screen blanks. This might be a problem for sports photos and other fast-moving subjects. The default setting follows this by showing the picture you just took for a couple of seconds, but you can easily change that in the options menu. Positive features include a very good user interface, via the eye-level viewfinder or a very bright back screen, with reasonably intuitive controls and a good range of optional settings - at eye level you work the zoom and shutter release with your forefinger, picture mode with the thumb. The more complex settings are controlled by menu buttons etc. on the back of the camera. You can switch between SLR-style operation and using the back screen for composition, which is an option many true SLRs lack. One thing worth mentioning is that this camera can use SD cards; the slot is labelled XD but can take both types of card, and SD cards are much cheaper. I get 1000+ pictures on a 2gb card, which is pretty good. Overall, this is a very good camera for most purposes - there are some circumstances where an SLR or another type of camera would be better, but it's hard to beat as a "carry everywhere" camera for amateur and semi-pro use. I've used it mostly for nature photography (uploading pictures to e.g. Wikipedia) and have been very pleased with the results. The sensor has some infra-red sensitivity and you can get some interesting results with a 720nm filter added to screen out most visible light. Note - a few months after writing the review the mechanism that raises the flash stopped working, my guess is a spring broke, probably as a result of slightly rough handling. It turned out to be cheaper to buy another second-hand than get it repaired. I've stuck with this model, and in all other respects I'm very pleased with it.Read full review

I would recommend getting this camera if you are starting off in photography. It has all the features of a DSLR without spending hundreds of pounds. It might not be as fast as a DSLR but it is a good jumping point to a better camera. It's light and compact and takes pretty good photographs for the money.
