Paperbacks are not usually beautiful; this one is, with its cover reproducing a 19th century floral design. Elizabeth Barrett Browning's poems, whether by her or translations, are also beautiful; they are what made her future husband, Robert Browning, wish to meet, and later to marry, her. 'Dear Miss Barrett, I love your poetry and I love you too...' Reading the poems, you can see why. The rest is history. Elizabeth should be better known than she is; she is an important literary figure who is still, to some extent, overshadowed by her famous (and brilliant) husband and his brilliant friends, such as Tennyson. Touchingly, the image of the Brownings' love survives their death; from their adjacent grave slabs in Highgate Cemetery his enormous hand, carved in marble, emerges and clutches her small, delicate hand.
