HORNBY R2504 SR M7 30051 An excellent model of this popular class of locomotive. It's DCC READY but would require the fitting of a decoder for DCC operation. I tested it and it was a little hesitant until it loosened up a bit.

  • Excellent model, well detailed with a good performance.

This is a excellent model of the M7 class locomotive. It is well detailed and finished. It is accurate and covers the main variations of the class. It has a solid and quality feel and operates well. While the latest issues of the model have become expensive and somewhat overpriced second hand items like my purchase are available at a far more affordable prices. Just be aware that this review applies only to the latter Hornby model and not the earlier Tri-ang /Hornby model that dates back to the 1960s.

  • Great model but fitting decoder not for the faint hearted

This is a really nice DCC ready loco and I would have given it 5 stars BUT fitting a decoder is a nightmare. There is insufficient room above the socket to fit a direct decoder so it has to be a harness one but, even then, there isn't enough room above the motor either. I looked it up on the Hornby website where there were instructions a) prise off filler cap from left hand tank b) unscrew the ballast weight that sits inside the tank c) remove, with difficulty, the weight d) lay the harness flat above the motor e) fix decoder in the empty tank, using sticky tack or similar but making sure the decoder is insulated from the motor that sits adjacent. I finally did it but it's still a squeeze and, inevitably, I did some minor damage. Anyway, it's now up and running doing what I bought it for - pulling and pushing my push pull set which it does really well. I ran it for half an hour on my layout in push mode and the couplings didn't over ride and there were no derailments. All well worthwhile in the end!

A well produced model. It has lots of added detail and runs so smoothly. I would certainly recommend this item for your layout.

  • M7 tank loco

Lovely model, full of detail, only small issue is that there is no front coupling.
