Now before I ooze praise about the HP17bII+, if you are in the market for a calculator, work out what you need it for! Sounds simple but if you don't need the bells and whistles get something that suits better.I say this as if you are not au fait with the financial concepts it can be a bit bamboozling. This machine is simply awesome, I have owned an HP10b for about 14 years and I thought that was fantastic, but this gives me the full functionality in a very simple ueseable format, with a great screen. I am also building up a suite of my own programmed calculations. I own and run a Financial Planning company and need plenty of oomph in a claculator to work out client's mortgage payments, time value of money, currency conversions and cashflow functions etc. when face to face. The HP17bII+ is very well built(bizarrely the older HP calculators appear to be even more robust, but heh that's progress for you). You aslo have the choice of Algebraic or RPN inputting (Reverse Polish Notation to the unfamiliar). Essentiallly RPN speeds up inputting so for those maths heads out there/ heavy computer users, worth a go. The support and tuition that can be sought from the hewlett packard site is excellent and you can choose on-line spoken tutorials, or interactive training as well as downloading the substantial manual. So, in summary choose what you need a calculator for. For simple TVM, Amortisation, Cashlow, Statistics, Markup/Margin and interest rate conversions, go for the HP10b11 which is a cracking machine. For those that need more,RPN, Bond calculations (yes, you know who you are...)and you were weened on the HP12c, a) The 12c Platinum Anniversary is a peach and b) If you are a hard-core 12c user why are you reading this!! If you want more, Programmeable, great screen etc. and are prepared to put in the work to get to know how it works get the HP17bII+. It should give you many years of excellent use.Read full review
