This story of an ambitious aardvark who drums on trees to shake out the ants is well thought-out and lovingly executed in meticulously performed stop motion. Barry Purves, the brain behind this short film was also the producer of the award-winning Wallace and Gromit animation "The Wrong Trousers", and "Hamilton Mattress" is right up there alongside its more famous sibling. The extras on the DVD are well worth a watch, since the team shows us exactly how painstaking they have to be to achieve the fluidity and credibility that they get. The sets are as beautiful as those for any full-scale live action film, but more so for being in miniature. And the music ... say no more! All in all, it may only be a short piece, but it will more than repay your time. In fact, I daresay you'll find it so irresistible you'll have to watch it at least twice. My suggestion is (1) watch the main movie; (2) watch the "making of" piece, (3) watch a few other bits, (4) come back to the main movie and watch it all again, this time looking and listening out for those little "insider secrets" that bring you a huge smile when you're the only one who's in on it. having watched small clips of this year's atrocious Eurovision which is now covered in Americans and Australians in a gender bender grotesque freak show, is it not nice to see true creativity, fun and happy memories from a time when a show like this showed how disgusting the Tellytubbies were??

Like the previous reviewer I already had Hamilton Mattress on VHS and as I still enjoy watching it I decided to get it on DVD with the special features!
I had a copy of this on video for the grand kids to watch they all loved it. Now the greatgrand kids are coming along I thought they would like it too. Of course I had to buy the DVD version as the video has bit the dust. The grand kids like it. Its colourful, noisy and has a story. Just great for them.
