The Austerity Olympics OK its the first time I've bought a new and paperback book for a while, it's the old and very-old dog-eared ones that fascinate me. But, after watching the TV programme about two rowing competitors in the 1948 Olympics I chatted with a friend in our U3A creative writing group and he recommended the book, with enough details for me to find and buy it on ebay. The pictures are great, the intro by Lord Coe a bit too long. I remembered my hatred of the way that paperbacks have to be held in both hands and the binding strained to stop them closing, I gave the book away as a birthday present to a known paperback reader. A first edition, signed, hardback copy was available on ebay but with a £75+ price tag. Would I buy the book as an digital download? Picking up my Kobo reader is not as exciting as delving into the pages of an old Mark Twain or Kipling book. I shall continue to buy old books from charity shops and the local book sale.Read full review
