Simple to operate was main main reason for choosing the Hitachi HDR5T01 as it was for my 87 year old mother who lives for her tv programs. Picture and sound quality is excellent and the onscreen menu`s are simple to follow making recording & playback simple. Overal a great little unit at a fraction of the price of the big name brands.

Bought for a pensioner who can not cope with modern technology..sad to say that this piece of xxxx is sadly lacking in even the basic functions.such as a 24 hour clock that can not be changed to 12 hour setting.spoke to engeneers and they confirmed not a changeable program.okay so went on to explain that the recording system records multiple channels .ie.7 BBC 1 Because of regional transmission .it also wants to record all the repeats..Jeez how bad is that .next the item highlights certain programs in the epg.again something not necessarily a good thing.and again something you can not change.there are many other things wrong with the basic functions of the out dated technology but I've had enough sent it to be shot

Although branded Hitachi, it's made by a company called Vestel. I've had a couple of it's SD predecessors, one was branded Hitachi, another Technika. The Hitachi HDR5T01 500GB Freeview+ HD Digital TV Recorder (B-Grade)- I received From Argos ebay, seem like it was used, dented, managed to get the dent out after taking off the top cover. Other users complain of frozen picture, bad sound etc.. This is mainly because they probably still have the old aerial with analogue cable coming from the aerial, this loses some of the signal. You do not necessarily need a new aerial may be just the cable coming from it. It will also help if you delete some of the channels your not going to watch, so the DVR will not download the EPG for them, this should help the DVR respond a bit quicker.

This is a Hitachi labeled product but not made by them. Picture and sound quality are very good and programing and general functionality is good. The dual tuner allows the viewing of playback while recording another channel. The only problem is the seemingly random freezing of picture and sound during program playback . This can occur for up to 30 seconds and is extremely annoying. It seems to coincide during playback when another program is starting to be recorded or finishing recording. There appears to be no software updates to resolve this and product backup is poor. If it wasn't for these issues it would be an excellent product.
