I bought this book because Janie Hampton was to be the speaker at our Annual Review and thought I had better read it in advance and am so glad I did. The book is well-researched and give a fascinating insight into the history of the Girl Guides especially the first 50 or so years. There was so much I didn't know about. I am not sure about the last chapter. Whilst it is still interesting and relevant, I wonder whether the author was not sure how to end the book. The book as a whole has brought out so much information which the general public can now read for themselves what a great movement Guiding has been and still can be.
I bought this book because I had heard it was good and yes I found out things about Girlguiding that I never knew. How they were involved in the Kinder Transport, worked for the security services during the war when they gave the Boys Scouts the flick because they weren't good enough. I was moved to tears hearing what girls before I was born were doing and the help that they were giving people. A few months after I bought this book I met Janie Hampton and she signed my hardback copy of the book and explained why she had written the book and the inspiration and knowledge that she had that I knew nothing of having been a member of Girlguiding UK for nearly 30 years. Buy this book and experience the amazing knowledge and descriptions of fun and bravery that the Guides had and know that this continues today.Read full review
I am thoroughly enjoying reading about so many interesting details of how the Girl Guides contributed to the war effort and morale in both world wars. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes discovering lesser known areas of recent history and those interested in real practical Guiding and the difference it made.
