Humphrey Lyttleton! He started out playing traditional jazz, which I like, but he wasn’t stuck in an old format and tended to more mainstream stuff, if not “modern jazz”. He is a fine trumpet virtuoso, plus he was 'the' popular figure in the fifties. He presented a jazz show every week on the radio and he was simply “Mr. British Jazz”. Being around so long, he became part of the fabric, and an era seemed to pass when he died.
Just love the compilation of Humph's earlier years New Orleans and Dixieland style jazz. As a trumpet player, I need as many styles of some of the 50's jazz and this compilation contains many of my favourite tunes played by Humph in a manageable style.
