  • Fantastic Reference Book

After buying several other insect guides this is now my go to insect book and have found around 90% of what I’ve been looking to identify in the UK, Spain and the Canary Islands. The illustrations are excellent and I prefer them to actual photographs. The content detail is excellent, telling you as much relative information as possible without overdoing it. I’m impressed with all the insect orders contained in the book and the detailed insect information at the start for budding entomologists. However, the section on spiders (not technically insects) is very basic so would require another, more specialised book. I now have 5 revisions of this book, this particular revision being the penultimate one before going out of print. This one is the best value for money and I would highly ...

  • The best guide by far for overal coverage of British and European insects

I confirm the more detailed coverage of many insect groups. It has a key to most adults. It is the only book to give detailed (not to be confused with comprehensive) coverage of Thysanura, Diplura and Collembola (the latter to several species), Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Phasmids and Dermaptera, Thysanoptera, Neuroptera (s. lato), micro Lepidoptera, Trichoptera, Mallophaga and Anoplura (lice), Siphonaptera (fleas). The damselfly section is a little disappointing but the dragonfly one is good. Orthoptera, mantids, phasmids and Dermaptera (earwigs) as weel as both Heteroptera and Homoptera, Diptera (including many Nematocera), Hymenoptera (including many sawflies) and Coleoptera all have extensive scope. There is even a section on aquatic larvae. Myriapods, woodlice, harvestmen and ...
