    Old processor thats still pretty good!

    Fantastic price and still a pretty capable processor (even though it’s ancient in pc terms) obviously some missing extensions so some demanding modern software may have issues, but it is fine for browsing/office and fairly good at gaming so long as you choose the right titles. LinusTechTips “$69 Gaming PC” challenge was based on one of these, so check that out if you’re interested in how these perform in gaming.

    Intel Quad core

    As most people may or may not know, when you buy your shiny new computer, it's the best thing you've ever used. Then about three years down the line it begins to slow down and takes an age to do anything. I had reached that three year point and decided i needed a new cpu to give my pc that little bit more ummph, i didn't want to replace the whole system just as few parts as possible. I new most of the system was still pretty up to date, apart from the cpu and a bit more memory. After checking out my mother board on the web and discovering it had a 775 slot fot the cpu, i went about researching the best cpu there was for that slot. Then i compared cpu's just below the best one for price and performance, the Q9550 2.83GHz gave good performance for the very reasonable price, the reviews were ...

    Sweet little Overclocker!

    After much experimentation on my old Gigabyte EP35 DS4 motherboard I found the best settings were fsb 425 with the tiniest bump in voltage-0.025v in fact the smallest increase the bios permitted. With the memory divider set to 2-it's speed was 800mhz. This gives 3.4Ghz and just 55 degrees C under load with a cheap freezer 7 pro cooler, it is rock solid for stability, and on various benchmarks is faster than standard elderly i5s. It would go to 3.5Ghz but my memory wouldn't tolerate it without increasing its voltage. Definitely found 3.4 was the sweet spot. Of course your mileage will vary with different parts and setups. BTW mine cost me just £20.

    Recommended for the Socket775 owners to give a new life to the hardware.

    Bought this CPU as an upgrade from Pentium Dual Core E5200. I can say the difference in performance, response and overall use of the computer is much smoother now. I can recommend this processor as a good upgrade just right in between the Extreme Quad CPUs and the Q8xxx series. This will allow me to skip Ivy Bridge CPU generation as from the performance point of view and wait for the next gen Intel CPUs. There is also the option to overclock to push it towards the Core i5-i7 performance level without spending money on the whole platform upgrade. Mine is performing after a mild overclock on par with the Q9650 which is more expensive.
