This is a good addition to the Land Rover owner's library - not too expensive and with some useful information, particularly for Series III owners (although I'm sure a lot of it will also be relevant to owners of SIIA and early 90 models). This isn't a book aimed at the "rivet counter" or concourse-standard restorer, as the author freely admits that he wanted to "improve" his SIII, adding non-standard extras like Santana parts and features from later Land Rover models. If you believe old Landies that have made it this far ought to be treated with a certain amount of respect for their originality, you will probably wince as the author takes out a perfectly good and original bulkhead in order to fit a new but hacked-about Santana replacement. Despite this, there are some useful sections on rebuilding various mechanical parts, bodywork sections and other components. There are plenty of photographs (quite good quality considering the price of the book) and diagrams to make things clearer. The writing style is relaxed and chatty, and the author is happy to admit when he makes mistakes or does things in the wrong order (good because it saves the reader making the same mistakes). The book is also good to have because it covers some processes which aren't picked up in detail in, for example, the Haynes Land Rover owner's workshop manual. Armed with the latter, the factory Repair Operations Manual and this volume, you should be able to tackle most jobs to keep your old Series III on the road.Read full review
