Connected up as directed. Smoke came out of the board inside when turned on accompanied by a loud buzzing from the amp. Felt like throwing it in the bin and putting it down to (bad) experience but had a change of heart and repaired it myself. When dismantled, discovered two capacitors in the power supply section had blown because they were not rated at the correct voltage. Replaced them and at least it now works (sort of) but with 50 and 100Hz noise on the output. This is undoubtedly from the onboard power supply. A phono pre-amp like this should never have AC fed to it - only regulated DC. The design is fundamentally poor and I could never recommend this product to any hi-fi enthusiast. On the good side, the case provides good screening and the valves look quite cool but their only function is as a cathode follower, they do not provide any amplification.Read full review

I was very excited to get a valve pre-amp. It looks great with its little glowing tubes. Unfortunately, the sound really lets it down. Distorted and muddy, my ancient NAD solid-state phono-preamp (it was a cheap one too) completely blows it away. It's back in its box now. Such a shame.
