My two favorite periods for completely incompetent song style choice since World War II are the late 1950s white pop maltshop rock 'n' roll by washed up guys in sharkskin suits trying to follow in Frank's footsteps, but wiggling their hips around for that teen hit, a la Elvis, and a brief window between 1966 and 1972 when album oriented finger-poppers put on Nehru jackets, flashed peace signs, and sang out-of-date slow Beatles' songs (and two years TOO LATE after the Summer of Love; neither they nor Spriro T. Agnew, the Superman friend of the Silent Majority, realized they'd been passed by) because they just couldn't get up-to-date material. The latter perfectly explains the breathy, whispery, microphone lust of Julie London. And what a package! (The album, that is; her, too.) I read a biography that Julie had a fairly severe case of stage fright in front of the microphone when recording, thus to make her at ease, she partook of spirits. This album, though, has that atmosphere that suggests that the Jefferson Airplane sneaked into the studio and spiked that punch with acid while their mother recorded "Stone Soul Picnic," "Light My Fire" (like Jim Morrison's version, you knew EXACTLY what she meant on this track), "Hushabye Mountain," "Yummy, Yummy Yummy," and the most execrable version recorded of "Louie, Louie." An absolutely great album of some of the most wacked-out mood and song choice mistakes ever recorded. If you like this album, you're sure to enjoy Tony Bennett's homage to Bill Shatner, TONY SINGS THE GREAT HITS OF TODAY, Columbia CS 9980, try JERRY VALE WHERE'S THE PLAYGROUND, SUSIE, Columbia CS 9838, Mel Torme's 1966-70 mod pop albums, or try to find that Sammy Davis, Jr. album on Motown.Read full review
this is julie at her peak with yummy, etc. and hushabye mountain. her voice is like red velvet...sexy, soft and deep. mighty quinn is also excellent. the rest show their age. still, in all, the only version close to hushabye is bobbie gentry. the rest are pathetic.
