Online comparisons of the M-Audio digital recorder gave it a favorable rating compared to others in its price range. The one I bought was the Microtrack 24/96, which was a bit less favorably rated than the newer Microtrack II. The 24/96 is adequate for my purposes: general recording; music class; songwriting. The price I paid ($126 with shipping) was somewhat high compared to recently completed sales. I mistakenly bid on this one, thinking it was the newer model, but I'm o.k. with the product I received. I put an 8 gig compact flash card in it, so I have lots of recording time. The main problems are the short battery life--I will open the case to see what I can do; also, see about making a battery pack with a higher milli-amp/hour rating. The included microphone really isn't adequate, but this could be a problem with the older internal batteries not delivering enough power for the mike to perform adequately. All in all, the Microtrack 26/94 is adequate for voice recording and acceptable for basic music recording. Read the reviews and comparisons carefully to decide if this one is right for you. See if you can't get it in the $70 to $95 range.Read full review
I bought one of these for my son who works in broadcasting over 10 years ago. The ease of use, portability and quality of the audio was impressive. He still uses it to record interviews and field recording today. I just purchased a used unit to record ambient audio and nature sounds. It is well buil, taking a lot of bangs, bumps and rough handling. The battery still holds a good charge and the controls are all in excellent condition. The audio is excellent, crisp and clean. Even after years of previous use, this recorder still is a workhorse. I am sure I will use it for years to come.
Got it used from e-bay and attached an additional i-phone battery on the back by connecting two wires from the original battery pack. This thing can play for 4+ hours now. I hope that it takes SD/SDXC card but not the out-of-date CF card, which is big and only has 4G byte of capacity. I have to manually adjust the maximum level before recording, which can easily clamp for more dynamic music. Also, it would be nice to have an S/Pdif output. I need to upload the file to my computer before I can use my own D/A converter. For the price, you can not find anything similar in sound quality.
It is a quirky product and I bought it actually broken and have not been able to fix it. I does not need lot of knowledge. Most of the broken if you buy they will be with dead batteries which have caused the issue or people have damaged CF cards. Use Kingston 128MB CF card for any firmware upgrade work. You can replace the battery with iPhone batter the older model and that should give you good life. It has been compared to H4N in hay days.
I could give the best grade... Excellent quality records with a small recorder. Digital input (sp/dif), two channels with separate volume adjust, 24bits/96kHz records... The only issue against is the rechargeable internal battery. Once it start to loose the energy store capacity, it has to be replaced... only by M-Audio! The solution: use the wall charger always.
