Some revealing, often funny insights into what goes on behind the scenes of broadcasting a professional bike race. Carlton Kirby comes across as a man who loves his cycling and knows how to enjoy life. I've often heard Carlton refer to the "magic spanner" during races and wasn't sure what he meant. Lo and behold, the very next day after reading the section detailing the titular spanner, I saw it happen in the Tour de France! In short, it's riders using the excuse of getting a bidon from their team car to get a cheeky speed boost. If you're a Kirby hater then you wouldn't ever consider reading this anyway (btw - get a life). If, like me, you think he's the best cycling commentator out there then I recommend this book. It's well worth a read and probably a second or third.

I really enjoy his commentary although many don’t. Given his love of word play, I was expecting for a more coherent developed view of his role and experiences. The fact that it was recorded, probably over a good bottle or two, and then transcribed may account for its lightweight, episodic nature. It gets better towards the end where I felt as though he was more in control of the writing. It is nowhere near as funny or informative as Ned Boulding’s Yellow Jumper account.
