I lived close enough to pick up this chainsaw from the seller. It did not have the chain-brake, something I did not notice from the photos. I got the necessary parts to fix this. I had a new bar and chain, so I installed these. The owner indicated it needed a new airbox, so I ordered one and replaced it. The airbox supports the rear handle, and if you drop the saw on the handle, it will break the pot metal mounting. Parts for these saws are quite easy to find, and eBay is the best source. It is a relatively easy fix however. The saw runs very well. McCulloch saws are very strong, this one is no exception. I have two others like it. I use this one the most as it starts easier than the one I have had for years (bought new around 1986), and the other one I got from eBay is so nice, I am saving it. A well tuned McCulloch 610, 650, Timber Bear and the like, with a sharp chain will go through wood like butter. Make sure to keep the air filter clean and make sure the bar and chain stay oiled. I think the 610s are well balanced and they are a nice looking saw. They are a bit heavy, but they are well made and will serve you well. I count this purchase as well made, even with the additional maintenance to bring the saw up to my high standards. I have 4 acres of trees, and this winter was especially bad for downing trees. This saw will make short work out of cutting them up for firewood. I wish these companies would stay in business forever. They get sold and very rarely keep the original tradition of providing great products. I hope McCulloch retains their heritage. McCulloch started business in 1943, went Chapter 11 in January 1999 and acquired by a Taiwanese company. In March 2008, Husqvarna acquired Jenn Feng outdoor products division, gaining access to the McCulloch brand in the North American market. McCulloch is since a brand within the Husqvarna Group. I think they will have the back-round to make the McCullough name a great one again. I certainly hope so.Read full review
Great saw to put a 24" bar on... You need a Pro Mac 650 if you want to use a bigger bar. This saw if it has been taken care of is still in service. it is a metal bodied chainsaw (except the air filter cover) that makes it a little cumbersome for the older guys who run them for +2 hrs. I use it primarlily for the BIG cuts... logs 12" and thicker. Just lay the saw into the log.. and let it feed itself thru on its own weight. great power!! it is to big and heavy to use as a trim saw. A bargain for $150 but if your sold on a 600 series... go spend the extra on a pm650. Thats a saw that will EASILY cut 1.5 inches per second with a newer blade.
I have owned a Timber Bear 605 for over 20 years and purchased a used 610 off of Ebay 5-6 years ago. I cut about 3-4 full cords a year, elm, cherry, ash and maple. The 610 is the balls. It is a tank, no cheap flimsy plastic on this brute and it will give you a good upper body workout after a few hours. It does weigh a bit. Am in total agreement with the previous review. I have noticed in the past few years the carb diaphrams go bad frequently, every two to three years, probably from the ethanol. Parts replaced on both saws, (1)carb,(4)carb diaphrams,(1)ignition module,(2)fuel lines,(1)starter,(1)clutch, (as needed) air filters, spark plugs, sprockets/bars and chains. Parts purchased off of Ebay. There are no marks on the intake or exhaust side of the pistons and the compressions are both in the 150 range. Both saws have always been reliable. I have been teased by neighbors for holding on to my MACALUCKS, but there is just something special about an real American chainsaw. It's like an old Harley.Read full review
Have owned Mcculloch saw's and trimmer's for many years they are some of the best made for durability. It all boils down to one thing when buying a used saw, how was it taken care of by the previous owners and you will more then likely not get quite upfront answer. Ask the questions and look close at all pictures, get very familiar with the 5700/605/610/650 saws and you (with homework) will get one of the best saws for the money that you will ever own. Maintenance is relatively easy if you pick up owner/parts manual and with care it will last for years.
I bought mine new about 25 years ago. I do not use it regularly but when I need it - it always starts. I have replaced the bar and chain on it. (of course I wore a few chains out before the bar had to be replaced)That is all I have had to replace on it. This is the best saw I have ever owned. It cuts the big stuff. as already stated it is to heavy for trim work. I like the manual oilier on it there are times it comes in handy even though the adjustable oilier works fine. I like the deep throaty sound the muffler makes. If I needed a bigger saw this is a nice one to get.
