I think the vintage of this camera is around 2003 at which time it was priced at a few £00, I think. I bought mine via ebay for around £10 in 2010 What I like: It has a robust aluminium body. Even the plastic card and battery covers / doors feel sturdy. The manual mode allows a reasonable amount of flexibility including aperture priority (albeit the choice is only either fully open or fully stopped down) exposure setting, exposure bracketing and manual focus. What I dislike: The auto focus isn't very good and I mean not very good by the standard of cheaper digital cameras of the same vintage. This seems to be true for both multi-segment and spot AF modes and is a major drawback. It means I'd have to rank it below less sophisticated contemporaries such as the Nikon Coolpix 2100. Seems to be some barrel distortion in some of the photos I've taken. Like other cameras of this vintage it drains batteries quickly. The lens cap is flimsy. This is a big camera for a point and shoot. All in all, well worth the £10 I paid for it. It's well made and the manual features are a big plus. Value for this camera is in the £10 - £15 range.Read full review
This is a 4MB Compact Digital Camera that will appeal to both the basic amateur and the more advanced photographer. It can be used as a simple point and shoot camera but also has the ability to be used more adventurously via the Aperture or Shutter Priority Modes. The standard JPEG File Compression is available for storing photos on the Compact Flash Card and the camera also has the option of saving in an uncompressed format in a TIFF file. Be warned though that this consumes battery power and takes a longer time for the image to be written to the Card. The S414 is sturdily built and all controls are ergonometrically sound and well positioned. At 4MB it will enable enlargements in excess of 10x12 ins to be made without pixel degradation. The camera will also record movie sequences of a max 60 seconds.Read full review
This is an excellent all-round camera which has taken some super photos - I particularly like the 4x zoom lens. It is not as quick to start up and get ready to take photos as some modern digicams, and I have had some trouble focussing - do need to check that the focus light is on steady green before taking the picture or it's likely to be blurred. But at its going price of under £50 on ebay it's a bargain.
Excellent camera which also has a video function on it. Suitable for the in between camera that you need to upgrade, from basic to more functions, before going for a camera like the Dimage Z3. Battery power needs to be the rechargeable sort though as it gets through normal batteries like hot cakes!! All in all a good camera, but a little on the heavy side for what it is.
