Tim Burton with a twist
I enjoyed this film very much indeed, although I found it more obviously grim and scary than other Tim Burton films, which are subtler on various levels and therefore more suitable for different age groups. Being a fantasy film, a lot of explanation was required for viewers who had not read the book(s) and was a task well-mastered by the director, but it appeared to slow down the pace. A certain woodenness was inevitable when few characters had more than bit part appearances. A lot of threads remained unexplained at the end and Miss Peregrine's exit followed by subsequent non- appearance was confusing. The ending was so open, it was most unsatisfactory at several levels. Like a scene or two too many had been cut, spoiling the flow of the tale. It has inspired me to read the trilogy, which ... Good fun.
Loved the film! Was bought to have a film show for the grandchildren but shocked to see it suitable for 12 and over. They are aged between 6 and 11 so thought we'd better preview it. Good job we did as they would probably have had nightmares! They will enjoy it when they're a bit older.
