These books I have loved for the last ten years and since my copies (first sold as single books) were getting quite tatty, I thought I'd buy the up-to-date, space-saving versions (although I prefer the covers of the first uk printed books). The stories are as enchanting as I remember although now they can be compared to the likes of Twilight they would seem simple and short. 'Dark Angel' is my least favourite of the series but the character Gillian probably one of the toughest. A girl who is a wallflower, overcoming her insecurities guided by an 'angel' only to turn on him showed incredible amounts of strength in character; her growth as a person is probably one of the best in the series. The other main characters from the other stories already have a strength of sorts whether it be their fighting, their supernatural abilities or their compassion. Gillian however is a broken human who has to find herself before anything else. In 'The Chosen' we come across two characters who are probably the most tortured over their past. Rashel the vampire hunter watched her mother murdered by a vampire as a child which defines her as anything but a victim. Self-sufficient and honourable but lacking in friends, Rashel is the best vampire hunter known. Quinn, the adopted son of the most powerful vampire in the Night World, is the epitome of evil having lost his first love at the hands of his human father. He hates humans more then he hates vampires. When Rashel realises her soulmate is a vampire, she still conducts herself with the same moral codes she has been taught but with a softer edge. Reading about a character who can encompass love in her fight is a nice change from female characters who become incredibly feminine and soft when they find their other halves. 'Soulmate' explores the theory of reincarnation. Hannah is an Old Soul with a twist, she has never lived beyond her 17th birthday due to her unfortunate recurring murder by a vampire. Killed in every lifetime since cave-times, she is warned by her subconcious in bizarre ways forcing her to visit a psychologist who brings to light her gut feeling to be wary of Thierry, a lord of the Night World. Thierry is the first ever made vampire and also Hannah's soulmate. This story is primarily a love triangle between Maya (the first vampire) who specifically made Thierry to be hers forever, Thierry and Hannah. Hannah's immediate distrust of Thierry leads to her being vulnerable to Maya and so the cycle of evil continues. Hannah is a likeable character and to be honest, she wasn't the one I was most interested in through this story. Thierry, a complex, deep and broody vampire holds the most intensity as a character and you can only imagine his depths. Having lived for so long, he commands a large entourage who are loyal and ready to lay down their lives for him. It is he who carries this story. His eventual understanding of why he can let the love of his life go and live past her 17th birthday without it destroying him is something that could only be learned by losing her and waiting for her to return; a concept only the oldest vampire and an Old Soul could understand and so the triangle and their bond with each other lives on.Read full review
