This version of Hornby's class 73 is based on the Lima model that has been worked over. The body is still very good for an older tooling, with decent representations of the engine grills. The moulded roof fan may be slightly under size but the others look bang on and are fine as is. Careful weathering will really accentuate them. Paint and numbers very good. It is now DCC ready with Hornby's standard 8 pin decoder socket. There is loads of space within the body to fit sound chips and speakers should it be required. Hornby have also replaced the motor with a more modern version, which runs quietly. Electrical pick up is from all 4 axles and mine run flawlessly over track with plastic crossing frogs even at slow speed. It still has Lima's representation of the underframe equipment between the bogies which is moulded plastic and lacks depth and detail. There are no lights fitted to this model, which is a shame for the manufacturersretail price. There are several companies who manufacture after market lighting kits which are fairly easy to fit with some kit building experience and knowledge of basic model railway electrics, and these really enhance the model. These really should be in Hornby's Railroad range now, and priced accordingly. Look out for items in retailers sales, or good condition pre-owned ones on auction sites. I like it, recommended.Read full review
