As a huge fan of Shane Meadows, I was expecting subtle humour, clever writing and interesting directing techniques. I was not disappointed! 'Once upon a time in the midlands' is a fun and emotion jerking story about the battle for a lady's love. One one side, Rhys Ifans is the over trying (and quite pathetic) love fool clinging on to his girlfriend after making an idiot out of himself on Live TV. The 'ex' (Robert Carlyle) has seen the blunder and moves in to reclaim his abandoned love and mother of his child. Welcome the conflict between the nerd and the maveric. Ricky Tomlinson plays the guitar strumming 'cowboy wannabe' father of the lady (Shirley Henderson) at the centre of the two men's affection. Also enjoy performances from Kathy Burke and a few other little surprise roles. The characters are colourful and well chosen by Mr Meadows. The story line is equally colourful and amusing too. You'll laugh, you might cry, but you will be entertained from start to finish. A charming and witty film not to be missed. If you enjoyed this, I reccomend you also watch, '24/7', 'Dead man's shoes' (not for the faint hearted) and 'A Home For Romeo Brass' all by Shane Meadows.Read full review
