I couldn't wait to read Al Robertson's Crashing Heaven, having had it on my watch list for several months pre-publication. Like many books though, it didn't grab me from page one. I was about eighty pages in before I began to get into the swing of the narrative. Its really good, packed with interesting detail overlaid on an unusual plot - not really hard science fiction, but in a hard sf setting. Robertson is compared in some reviews with the late Philip K Dick. I wouldn't agree with that - Dick was absolutely unique - but Robertson does have his own unique style and his is a voice that will undoubtedly develop over future books. I will definitely be buying his second novel 'Waking Hell' when it comes out. Heaven knows we need more big name SF authors like Peter Hamilton, Alastair Reynolds, Stephen Baxter etc. Al Robertson might just edge in there in coming years.Read full review
