Back in the day the release of a new Pixies 12” was always an event, because beyond the obvious appeal of the lead track you got two or three highly entertaining B-sides. Those EPs are out of print now, but here are all of the extra tracks on one great CD. This CD is everything a B-sides compilation should be. There are crazy live tracks; half-formed ideas; superb misfits; alternative versions of album tracks; throwaway instrumentals and cover versions. If you are reading this review you probably already know what the band sounds like, but what you need to know is this CD is brilliant and needs to be in your collection if you are a fan of the band. For example, ‘Into the White’ and ‘Manta Ray’ are as good as anything on ‘Doolittle’, whilst the nasty version of ‘River Euphrates’ which opens this disc is superior to its counterpart on ‘Surfer Rosa’. ‘Make Believe’, sung by drummer David Lovering in tribute to 1980s teen pop sensation Debbie Gibson, will make you smile, as will the mentalism of ‘Bailey’s Walk’ and ‘Santos’. Did I also mention that the two Neil Young covers are thoughtful and beautifully played? Another thing that is great about ‘B-sides’ is that in under 50 minutes you get a complete cross-section of Pixies’ sound from the spiky surf-punk of their early material, through the more expansive and polished sound of ‘Doolittle’ and ‘Bossanova’ to the brash metal of ‘Trompe le Monde’. The whole package is completed by Black Francis’s sleeve notes about each song. A five start treat for Pixies fans.Read full review
This is a must have for any true pixies fan or for those of you who like your albums a bit more rough around the edges and not studio perfect, Into the white is probably my favourite track.
