Hoya sold lenses made by other manufacturers - so reviewing a "Hoya 28mm lens" needs to be qualified by which model as many different versions were sold. === This one shown with the black aperture ring and smooth shiny metal mount is similar to the one I bought from e-bay that arrived today (in 2018). It is near identical to another model 28mm lens sold as a "Clubman" brand lens - which I also bought in 2017 from eBay. === The Good: these are well built - solid metal body with smooth focus control (if you get a good one). On a 35mm film camera with prints to 7x5 inches the images are good - as long as lens flare is avoided. === On a digital camera (I use MFT) this becomes a 56mm F2.8 equivalent standard lens. Now this doesn't seem to be much advantage over the standard "kit" zoom lens that comes with the micro-4/3 cameras - and also loses anti-shake control of the modern lens. The reason to use these old lenses is the "glow" or "cinema lens" effect when used wide open at F2.8 for portraits. === Those with a technical interest know that this effect is hard to fake in photoshop or videos and is created by spherical aberration in the lens. Ironically then - these generic lenses from unknown manufacturers may actually be more useful for the effect that you want then better optically corrected high-cost makers' original lenses. === The Bad: these were cheap lenses sold 30-40 years ago. Poor storage and handling means many have dirt, dust, haze (vaporized lubricants) and fungus inside that destroys the picture quality. Fungus also contaminates your other precious kit and despte claims that they can be "cleaned" they can never be "decontaminated". Also - hard use can end up with sand and grit in the focus mechanism - making them difficult to use in practice. Lastly - the aperture control blades can stick - making exposure adjustment a problem. Check for all of these before you buy. === Fortunately for buyers and sellers - there are excellent pages in the e-bay community site to help you check your old vintage or "legacy" lenses before sale and to help buyers know how to ask the right questions. === I got a great buy today !Read full review
