Brilliant Film!
This is my favourite film, first watched in the '70s. Sarah Miles and Robert Mitchum are excellent in their roles and John Mills is fantastic in the part of the village idiot in spite of the fact that he had no lines to learn! The theme music and the breathtaking Irish scenery are a perfect background to this romantic story. Ireland is such a beautiful country and I cannot think how anyone watching this film would not want to visit it. I am one of the lucky ones - I now live there!This is my favourite film, first watched in the '70s. Lean machine
There is something I find intrinsically attractive about Lean film's I think it is the cinematography, so lush and fine and so vast in scale. John Mills, playing a learning disabled adult, is exceptional, Sarah Miles compelling as the woman torn between a husband's dull comforts and a lover's fractured passion. The story, set during the first world war in Ireland, centres on the growing republican movement's clash with the British army. But for me it is the scenery which wins, the vast sandy bays plundered by huge waves as well as Sinn Fein. Brilliant under-rated David Lean epic
Brilliant under-rated film which stays in the mind long after watching and, to me, is the equal of David Lean's other great epics. The photography of the beautiful West Irish coast setting is stunning. The characters are complex, often admirable but flawed. Different plot lines bring up several surprises and keep you fully engaged for the full 3 hours.
