I purchased this model of camera used in like new condition (practically stole it) as a gift for my wife who is inexperienced in photograhy and I felt this would be a good start up DSLR for her to learn with. So far, so good, in fact she loves it, especially the live view feature, she wears glasses and using a view finder can sometimes be difficult, the live view is right there, easy to adjust and easy to see what it is you are about to take a pic of. It is easy to handle and easy to learn, the footprint or size of the body it what I would consider to be just about perfect for a womans smaller hands or for anyone with smaller hands for that matter, and has just about every feature that one could want in a DSLR, other than the lower pixel count (10.2) as opposed to a higher end DSLR, truth is, who really needs a DSLR with gobs of pixels, its great if you want to take or enlarge up to bill board size photos, but a lower pixel count camera will take just as good of pics as a higher end one if you use the correct lenses and make the correct adjustments. Sony produces a really nice line of DSLR's, their Alpha and SLT models and most all older Minolta AF A mount lenses can also be used on them as opposed to other makes and models where the lenses available are only the ones that are produced for that particular model or can only be used with an adapter. Overall she is very happy with it, so, yes, I made a good choice. The positives are: price, ease of use, easy to learn, easy to handle, takes great pics, interchangable lenses which are plentiful and readily available. Negatives...cannot really think of any, all is good!Read full review
I bought this camera to take advantage of my collection of Minolta AF lenses. I have used it now for two days and have taken 200+ test pics. using various lenses. I am very pleased with the quality of the photos. I am still in a learning curve in getting to know which settings work best with which lenses. I am very pleased with the Sony 18 55mm kit lens that came with the camera. Pros: Light weight, excellent kit lens, good battery life and best of all it works with the Minolta AF film lenses that can be purchased for a fraction of the cost of other DSLR cameras lenses. Cons: The menus are a little cumbersome to use and the camera is not a great fit for my hands. The layout of the controls could be better. Conclusion: It is an excellent buy for the quality of photos it is capable of producing. I love the fact I can use my Minolta lenses. I will update after I have gained more experience.Read full review
I decided to buy this camera because I would start in the DSLR world and therefore by design, size, portability and price I think I have hit. Its intuitive menus, ergonomics and light weight make it a good choice if you're looking to move from compact to DSLR world without seeking a professional performance but want to make a qualitative leap in terms of sharpness and quality of your photos are concerned. Another highlight is its built-in image stabilizer which subsequently lowers the lenses do not have to carry, and the option of live view is very useful, especially when it comes from compact world, like its retractable screen. The fault perhaps its 10 megapixel (within their range does not need more) and lets you take photos at 3200 ISO but it shows enough noise Overall an excellent camera for beginners for its simplicity, price and performance.Read full review
I actually already had one of the so this purchase was for my husband because he couldn't keep his hands off mine. This way we can share lenses, batteries, etc. I realize there are way better and more sophisticated models out there but they are way out of our range of knowledge (even this one is). To save myself from a bunch of frustration until I learn more, I've been using auto mode which is is just a step above a point and shoot. It has been perfect because i still get to manually focus for the majority of the shot but the camera fine tunes it for you if you're don't have it quite focused... fabulous! I am new to photography and know zero, and mine was a starter camera gifted to me by someone who upgraded so i figure I can do the same if needed. All in all we love them!

This is the best camera I have ever owned. I bought this camera because I have dabbled in photography in the past and I wanted to take my photography to the next level. This camera was a very good step up for me. There are so many settings and adjustments to allow you to get just the right shot and never sacrifice quality. Everything is laid out well and it's easy to figure everything out. I rushed right in and started using it right away and immediately fell in love with it. You do have to consult the manual a bit when you start getting into all the manual settings and adjustments. This camera is an ideal beginner-intermediate camera for those just getting into photography. The sensor size is one of the larger sensors on the market. ISO up to 3200. Shutter speed up to 1/4000 of a second. Auto & manual focus. Auto settings available for ISO, aperture, & shutter speed as well. Pre-programed modes include: auto, no-flash, portrait, landscape, small-subject, moving-subject, sunset, and night view. All these together allow the user to take photos in countless ways. With the 10.2 megapixel max image size, you don't really have to worry about loosing quality due to pixelation. Images can be saved in either RAW or J-peg format. Included software allows you to modify the RAW negative to get the right pre-settings to get the best out of your photos.(very very useful) Stores aprox. 1556 .jpg files on a 8G sd card. 358 .raw files on a 8G sd card. 291 .raw & .jpg files on a 8G sd card. 779 .jpg files on a 4G sd card. 178 .raw files on a 4G sd card. 144 .raw & .jpg files on a 4G sd card. All-in-all, this camera gives you seemingly endless possibilities for a better price than anything else on the market and does not compromise a thing. I highly recommend this product to anyone who wants to take their photography to the professional level.Read full review
