Apart from a live version of "Gold" this collection is pretty poor, a lot of early stuff, not my cup of tea really. Better collections are around so my advice would be to avoid this one and opt for "Gold, The Best of Spandau Ballet" instead. Track listing : 1. To Cut A Long Story Short 2. Paint Me Down 3. Freeze 4. She Loved Like Diamond 5. Lifeline 6. Gold (live) 7. Coffee Club (remix) 8. Foundation (live) 9. Highly Restrung (remix) 10. Reformation 11. Pleasure 12. Nature Of Beast 13. Innocence And Science 14. Raw
A compilation that is not just a greatest hits. It includes a couple of live songs Foundation and Gold and a couple of remixes Coffee Club and Highly 're' Strung. Makes for a good mix of tracks from the start of Spandau Ballet: To Cut a Long Story Short (Journesy to Glory) to the end Raw (Heart like a sky). Definitey worth buying.
The music of Spandau Ballet should have been a beacon towards which other "popular" bands should have punted towards. The fact that they did not points particularly in the direction of the lack of musicianship amongst many pop ensembles, and a similar lack of discernment amongst those who listen to the music that is peddled towards their palsied judgment. The album itself is excellent. Vocals are clear and well pitched, the singer being more than capable of working around subtle chromatic melodic shifts - he is, perhaps, the male equivalent of Flora Purim. The instrumentals are crisp and there is not so much as one hint of guitar tablature - what one gets is pure music, minims, crotchets, suspensions and even the occasional purposeful consecutive fifth and doubled third, not to mention a bassist who could and does approach the Alberti mechanism with expertise and verve. I am not able to comment on the market segment that Spandau Ballet are supposed to fit into. As a Classical musician, music to me makes sense in its structure and the accomplishment of the performers. Suffice to say that any lover of Classical or Modern Jazz will get a pleasurable input from this talented band. Gay friends advise me that the rugged masculinity of the vocals appeals to them, other people excoriate the band for being "too highbrow". Their music may not be likely to be heard in the "Queen Vic" on Eastenders on any retro jukebox they may have, and the complexity of the vocal melodies will beat all but the most talented karaoke artist. Anyone intrested in this music is urged to listen, and then to judge their degree of liking and/or appreciation in accordance with the output of their senses and brain, rather than by the stringent application of the false requirements of transient fashion.Read full review
I only really bought this album for one song on it which was 'LIFELINE' just really needed it in my collection! The rest of the album isn't the best ever, I only know a few of the other songs such as 'RAW'. I do love Tony Hadleys voice, he is excellent as lead vocals. Believe only a true fan would buy this album, as it has songs on that aren't at all well known!!
