  • Outstanding Quality Headphones

Having a relatively small & narrow head made finding headphones that fit well without squashing my ears very difficult, but these Sun Ray Pro Golds are the most comfortable, high-quality, metal detecting phones I've ever owned. The leather earmuffs and padding are butter soft - much better than vinyl. I detect under the hot, desert sun, where wearing any type of headphones will feel pretty hot and sweaty. Personally, I think non-porous, vinyl-covered earmuffs cause one to sweat more. Leather is a natural, porous material and hopefully, by regularly cleaning and using leather protectant on them, the Sun Ray's will last me a long, long time. The sound quality is super crisp and clear; the noise suppression is very, very good. I love the heavy-duty coiled cord with the angled connector plug, which provides a lower profile than a straight connector. The cord is just the right length to stay out of my way while detecting and digging targets. I only needed to take off my headphones if I needed to stand up while leaving my detector lying on the ground if I needed to step away for a minute. This brings me to the subject of the new Limiter Switch, located on the outside of the left earmuff towards the front (when worn). It's purpose is to reduce or eliminate sudden, loud bursts of sound when sweeping over a large/shallow metal target, like a scream. I'm not convinced that the limiter switch is necessary or such a great idea. Before I decided to buy my new Sun Rays, I read a review that mentioned the limiter switch being located in a place where it can easily be bumped and switched accidentally when removing or putting the headphones on, but to be aware that if it suddenly seems like you can't hear anything (no threshold tone either), check the position of that switch. I had that happen the first time I used them and sure enough, I must have bumped the switch upward (Limiter "on" position) when I removed or put on my HPs again. That two-position switch moves way, WAY TOO easily, compared to the 3-way "mode" switch on the same (left) earmuff. You just barely bump it and it moves. Because I don't need or use the limiter switch at all because it turns off too much sound that I need to be able to hear in order to maintain proper ground balancing at all times and be able to hear even the faintest sound of a tiny nugget, it mostly just gets in my way. The hooded toggle switches are great - I just wish that limiter switch didn't move too easily and/or was situated in a better spot. I have tinnitus as well as a partial hearing loss of certain frequencies in my right ear, so single volume control headphones don't work well for me at all. The dual volume control on the Sun Ray Pro Gold headphones allows me to balance output sound to each ear individually, so I'm able to hear all frequencies at a volume level that is comfortable in both ears. Overall, the Sun Ray Gold Pro headphones are awesome. The one and only negative thing I can say about them is about the Limiter Switch. Maybe it's just a personal preference, but it seems to me that it's a bad idea to add a feature that shuts off my threshold tone when I can control that on my detector, without the possibility of missing out on the important sound ques my Gold Bug Pro VLF detector gives me when I'm hunting gold nuggets. The Limiter doesn't work at all with the Minelab CTX-3030, yet they included a CTX-3030 compatibility setting so the headphones will work with them - but the limiter won't. I'm not exactly sure what type of detector or detecting the limiting function is good for but I think it's an unnecessary addition to an already great product.

  • The best headphones ever

I have been using the SunRay headphones for over 10 years now, and I find that they have the sharpest response to the small targets, and very clear. They are also extremely comfortable, resilient to wear, and the locking switches are an amazing addition!! For my metal detecting needs these will be the only headphones that I will use!!

  • The Best!

I tested this Sun Ray Pro Gold headset against my new White's Pro Star headset: The White's headset could not detect, at all, a tiny, bb size, lead target, but I got a good target response with the Sun Ray Pro headset; when I tested the headphones with a nickel target, I got a 5 inch greater depth response with the Sun Ray Pro. I know now that I can detect smaller nuggets and deeper nuggets that I would have missed with the White's headset. Both the White's and Sun Ray headsets are quite comfortable.
