Its based on real people, creative angst etc. Its not very cheery but the acting is excellent and I really like it. Early Daniel Craig performance. Star quality shines.

This is a very good movie, but somehow not an excellent one. It tells the tale of the relationship between American poet Sylvia Plath and her English poet husband, Ted Hughes. The romantic fascination and intellectual attraction between them at the outset is electric, but it gradually deteriorates, through a combination of Plath's emotional weaknesses and Hughes' philandering, into a destructive, fraught relationship, one which ultimately causes Plath to finally make a succesful suicide attempt (having failed several times before she met Hughes). The delectable Daniel Craig smoulders as Hughes, and offers an enchanting, engaging performance (as he seems to do in whatever role he's playing). Meanwhile, Paltrow's portrayal of Plath is, to my mind, very impressive. She presents a real, thinking feeling woman, who faces the everyday struggles of motherhood, and of trying to build a career in a man's world, and really brings to life the figure of Plath, so often seen as either simply sinned against or sinning. Instead, her path is shown to be full of complexities and joy as well as pain, making her a character I could easily identify with. All that said, however, the film somehow fails to 'take off' as it might have done, though I suspect that this is more due to caution in the script, directing and editing processes than to the actor's performances. Overall, it offers a highly sensitive and moving rendition of a truly beautiful and tragic tale, and is certainly a film worth watching, to anyone with an interest in the lives of either of these poets (not to mention fans of Mr Craig's talents, such as myself!).Read full review
i purchased this item as i have been studying sylvia plath at college. this film was good although it only really tells about the life she led when she was at college and met her husband. i feel that it would of been nice to have more details on her childhood, i believe that alot of what occured in sylvia's life as a child had an effect on her life as an adult. enjoyable film, rather sad though.
Superb performance - well worth watching.
