Super energy efficient- I use it as a night light, 24 hours a day
I am an energy consultant (retired) who has worked in large buildings for almost 40 years. In lighting, I've replaced many thousands of T12 (old-style) fluorescent lights with the newer T8 lamps, achieving up to a 65% reduction in energy usage. Most of it is in 24/7 buildings (apartment houses, hospitals, hotels) so the simple payback is one year or less. At home, I've replaced incandescent 60 watt bulbs in lamps, with 15 watt compact fluorescents, producing a 75% energy savings. But the CF lamps have been state-of-the-art for less than 30 years. The newer LED lamps have completely supplanted them. My 100 year old colonial is somewhat dark and needs a lot of inside lighting, especially on the stairs. I've started to replace CF lamps with LEDs. On low, these lamps (table lamps, screwed to the wall) draw 1-2 watts, a trivial amount of power compared to I (60 watts) and CFs (13 watts). Forget the energy savings, you can save an awful lot of money with these lamps. LEDs are not replaceable, but I have several LED bulbs that have 45,000 hours on them, and they continue to work fine.
