Sharp images with a max. aperture of f2.8, which result in a decent level of background blur. A perfect all around lens for tourism as it covers a wide landscape angle at 17-24mm, but also the more classical range 35-50mm perfect for street photography. The fixed max aperture makes it good for video too as it means zoom does not affect brightness.

Liked the reviews and the real thing was even better, great at wide open and feels very solid and professional. Focusses fast, and is pretty accurate as well, not much hunting.

This is the second Tamron 17-50 I've owned, and if the quality control at Tamron is as good as I think it is I should be delighted. The reason for selling my first was due to the fact I talked myself into believing that the Canon system was better for my use (Wedding and Portrait photography) so the lens I had (attatched to a fuji Finepix S3)which was a Nikon fit had to go. I now know after owning the Canon for a year , that allthough the Canon system is great, for me the Fuji had the edge in natural looking photos, and as somebody once remarked to me "nobody does colour Like fuji". So on obtaining a Fuji S5 the first objective was to obtain this fantastic lens again which I did on ebay (for an excellent price). My past experience as I have already said was great, apart from partnering the fuji very well the sharpness of this lens, I believe, rivals the Nikon equivelent, O.K I know the focusing is not as fast as the nikkor but the saving in weight and potablity more than makes up for this, coupled with the fuji it is an unobtrusive package and quashes the theory that you have to use huge lenses to get superb proffessional results, I am now looking forward to doing most of my weddings and portraits with this package. If I have to critisise further perhaps at 17mm there is some barrel distortion but I quite like the effect and used in the right way it can be creative. The fact that it is f2.8 right through the zoom range means that it is very useful for out of focus effects in portraiture and the out of focus effect(the bokeh)is truly beutiful, and as I said with the fuji a nice coloured out of focus background the results are immensely pleasing. This lens is also no slouch when stepped down and used as a landscape lens, giving me a very useful 35mm equivilent of 25.5mm at the wide end, I have had in the past some landscapes enlarged to 24 x16 inches from my previous lens and the picture is sharp from corner to corner. I suppose to sum up this lens is one of my favourites that I have ever owned in 32 years of photography, ranking up there with my carl Zeiss 80mm Planar that fitted my Hasselblad, so, I am quite happy to recommend this fabulous little lens to anybody out there, go on grab yourself a stunning little bargain!!Read full review
Whilst trying to decide on a better lens for my 1.6 crop camera body from the Canon stable, I happened upon another review for this lens. A good lens equals a good price, or should I say, a seriously good price. Big money normally has to be spent in order to obtain the crisp sharp results we all crave. Add this attribute to the fact that this lens also has a permanebt aperature of f/2.8 and you have a seriously useful lens. Wide open this lens gives excellent results, images are sharp in the centre and remain pretty sharp into the corners. Effective in low light conditions, especially indoors and with an off-camera flash. This lens is comparable with the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 in terms of overall quality, minus the image stabiliser. This is no joke... Cost wise this lens is more than half the price if bought at new retail prices. So, in my opinion this lens is an absolute bargain with a really useful focal range and a lens that I would not hesitate to use for important shots wide open! This is the 1st non Canon lens that I have bought so now I can use the saving to add to the next important purchase...Read full review
My first major purchase over my kit lens (18-55IS) on my Canon 1000D. The lens construction feel, grip is so much sturdier and reassuringly heavy in comparison to the kit lens. It makes the kit lens feel like cheap plastic, I was never completely satisfied with the colour or sharpness produced by my kit lens with or without tripod. However with the Tamron it is exactly what I was expecting first time round, the large aperture adds a nice shallow depth of field, and helps great when I am doing low light photography.
