Firstly William H Macy never dissapoints. Secondly this is a film with a cool off the wall plot. Macy plays Bernie; the unluckiest man in Vegas - a guy whose bad luck is contagious - and he is employed in the last of the old time mob run casinos to kill high rollers' action. He is employed just to be around. Being paged to any area of the CAsino that is experiencing a winning punter. Bernie can end winning streaks just by standing nearby. Watch him walk around the casino floor and see the dissapointment all around as everyone nearby starts to lose. Mid way through however it all changes when he falls in love with a cocktail waitress (Bello) and gets "lady luck" which throws the situation into reverse. Things turn nasty when the casino director tries to break up the romance before his Casino loses too much money. So it's a gangster movie set in the seedy but glamorous world of Las Vegas and centred around the exploits of a down on his heels guy with the inate ability to turn peoples luck. Alec Baldwin is great as the despicable-even-though-he's-got-a-girls-name mob boss Shelley and Macy is spot on with his hound dog portrayal of 'the Cooler' of the film's title. A class watchable film.Read full review
