Tom Rolt has no peers when writing about engineering, the history of the industrial revolution, early transport, steam railways and canals. Not only had he mastered all the practical engineering skills himself but was also a fine writer of good English and compelling content and could reduce complex engineering concepts to simple terms. Anything he wrote is well worth reading. Particularly fine works are his biography of George and Robert Stephenson, early pioneers of steam traction and the Stockton & Darlington Railway and also his account of the reopening of the Tallylyn narrow gauge railway in Wales entitled Tallylyn Adventure.
