This is a great piece of literature in the detective fiction genre and I would strongly recommend it to any devotee of Philip Marlowe character who has not already read it. Perhaps one reading of it is not enough ? But the edition that I was sent was an older paperback, in average condition, and did not contain a foreword by Jeffery Deaver. Therefore I cannot comment on that content/edition.

Excellent book, you may read it wondering "Where is it going with this next part? I thought the case would be closed after that thing happened!", but everything comes together with no loose ends. Personally, I can't help reading Marlowe as Humphrey Bogart in The Big Sleep [1946], even when he's noted as being tall & handsome, because Bogey did such a good job with the character. Tough as nails, still pushing buttons & cracking wise even while he's getting slapped around, and that's who you get in this story. Of course, there's some archaic language, but not much at all, and it did make me want to try a gimlet.
