Inevitably, the film doesn't capture all the subtleties of Grahame Greene's novel, but it evokes the atmosphere of 50's Vietnam with what feels like authenticity. A good understated performance by Michael Caine as the world-weary English journalist. Not a shoot-em-up action movie, but a thought provoking tale.

Very poignant as we have just been to Saigon.

Graham Greene prided himself on the authenticity of the research for his writing - and this film is based on one of his best stories. I was in VietNam (as a traveller/tourist, not a war correspondent) during the war of the 60's and 70's, and I bought this because it brings back so many of the memories, even though the feelings of fear are brought back by the action. It is a classic of its kind, and a cracking good one. And well acted, well spoken and worth spending time and money - recommended.
I bought it because I went to Vietnam last year and went to all the hotels mentioned in the film. Love Michael Caine and love Vietnam and love the film Also spent new years eve in Hotel Saigon sipping cocktails on the roof before flying off to Cambodia for NEW YEAR AT MIDNIGHT lINDA
