I have two FM2 bodies, the first one replaced a Nikon FA in 1993. I recently purchased a second black one as I had never really liked the chrome version. Since then I have been very comfortable with it. It's not perfect but it's so predictible and reliable that it's easy to work around the things that bother me. The controls are all easy to use, comfortable and durable and my only complaint here would be the depth-of-field preview lever which feels a little flimsy but works perfectly well. Some people complain about the film advance lever, which sits out a little to activate the meter (which turns off when the lever is flush with the body). This is one of my favourite features of the camera because I don't have to remember to turn the camera on or off with a conventional switch. Some people find it pokes them in the eye though. Additionally, with the lever locked out and provided I have wound on, I can grip the lever with my thumb, which is very comfortable. The self-timer doubles as a mirror lock-up for tripod shooting, which is handy. The meter is simple and accurate (centre-weighted, with the area indicated in the viewfinder; sadly no spot meter) but the meter display is probably the one thing I would change about the camera: the three LEDs are fine but I have always preferred a needle display. I've been comparing the size of my various cameras, from small cameras (Panasonic LX-3, Olympus Trip 35) through rangefinders (FEDs, Canon 7) up to a Nikon D300 and I can confirm that the FM2 is much more similar to a small camera or rangefinder than a DSLR. the right side of the body is swallowed up by the shooting hand and the left side is tiny. Width and height including the pentaprism are about the same as the Canon 7 or a Leica M5. Lenses are of course a good deal bigger but once you've got the camera in your hand that's a non-issue. It's not much bigger than an Olympus OM body, and I carry mine with a 50mm or 28mm lens in a small satchel just like my rangefinders or small cameras. No chance I could do that with a DSLR. The only way of really going any smaller is with a collapsible Elmar on a small RF body. In my experience size is more a function of how much the lens sticks out, as that's what determines whether it'll fit in a given pocket or bag; weight will also determine whether or not you take a camera when you head out the door. Once the cam's in your hand it doesn't really matter one way or the other. Summing up, the FM2 is small and light enough to take out for regular shooting , and powerful enough to ensure that the results meet your abilities and opportunities. It's a very handsome camera as well (the chrome version is bulletproof and the black one brasses very nicely). The shutter is wonderful, and although its sound is sharp it's not actually louder than my D300. I also believe they will hold their value as long as film continues to be produced. Finally I should add that I've had both cameras apart and swapped the body parts so the guts of my older camera are now in the shell of the black one, and I must say that the quality of the parts is outstanding, and it is no surprise that they hardly ever seem to break down, gum up or go wrong.Read full review

Le Nikon FM2N est certainement le reflex 24x36 mécanique le plus abouti. Comme les appareils de la série F sont devenus électroniques dès le F3, ils sont restés en retrait du FM2. Si vous êtes un amoureux du noir et blanc et que vous voulez une machine qui fonctoinne sans pile (sauf pour la cellule évidemment), le FM2N est pour vous. Ses principaux titres de gloire sont une splendide fabrication, un obturateur rapide (synchro flash au 1/250ème de seconde, il y a peu d'appareils à rideau récents qui font la même chose) Il vous faudra bien entendu l'équiper d'un objectif Nikkor. Ils sont nombreux en vente sur la toile. Prenez un objectif AI ou AIS si vous voulez bénéficier de toute les possibilités du FM2N.
