If Gandhi Travelled With The Doctor
The Doctor and Donna arrive ten years later than planned in 1947 Calcutta, during the religious and political fight for Indian Partition and subsequent independence. What follows is a wild adventure as they initially get split up, and then investigate further the events and sightings of strange looking creatures and poisonings that suggest that something else is also happening. The book includes plenty of good action moments including fights with an affected crocodile, snake and scorpions, a well conceived alien element which gradually builds the tension, plus a nice double twist at the end to keep you guessing until late on. The final rescue is then dramatic, although the interaction with the main enemy might have been a little stronger. It also includes a great time travel in-joke about ... It also includes a great time travel in-joke about 4D (towns), and its amazing that many different people get to use the sonic screwdriver. Donna is pictured throughout as a very loud character but, thanks to her Indian friends and relations, and therefore appreciation of diversity in the present day, we see some opposition to the mistreatment of Indians by the British Raj. This is however done as a modern interpretation on the ground, rather than seeing this time through a historical archive. It therefore creates an interesting insight into that part of British history, under the surface of a science fiction fantasy novel, although the themes of post war India and Partition are left very much as the background or setting. This is then made more accessible to a wider audience because, alongside Donna’s British experiences, most of the Doctor’s references are from late 20th century Britain, including Ginger Spice (which probably sounded like an ingredient at the time), HobNobs, and Denace The Menace. Other time references do however include Cleopatra’s bed chamber, 1960’s Hippies, the Oodsphere, and the Intergalactic Staring Championships. Gandhi himself is portrayed as open-minded with a selfless humour, and in his peace-loving personality he has a lot in common with the Doctor, helping them to form a great friendship. It’s also good to see that the wealthy British family and the military of the time, are shown as just as much subject to the events and threats, outcomes and solutions of the story, as the indigenous and downtrodden Indian population. In the way that it is written, the familiar characters also come alive on the page, so that there are times when you can almost see and hear the mannerisms and voice of David Tennant and Catherine Tate. I would very much liked to have seen this made as a television episode, although this storyline would probably have gone beyond programme making budgets. Overall then, this is a very welcome and enjoyable addition to the Doctor Who timeline, in its most appropriate and accessible form.

The best Doctor Who book available
I have read hundreds of Doctor Who books, from the old Target novelisations, through the Virgin New Adventures, Missing Adventures, Past Doctor Adventures, Eighth Doctor Adventures and now the latest BBC New Series Adventures series, and I can honestly say that this book is my favourite of them all. The author brilliantly portrays David Tennant's 10th Doctor, and his companions, Donna Noble and Ghandi so that each line can be heard in their voice. It's this astonishing gift of realism that makes the book come alive more than any other Doctor Who book I've ever read. The plot isn't amazing, but more than enough to keep the reader turning the pages, with plenty of interesting twists. I'd happily recommend this book, and look forward to reading his other Doctor Who New Series Adventures ...
