This is an excellent 1990s recording of the full score of Gilbert & Sullivan's tragic-comic opera "The Yeomen of the Guard", as performed by the New D'Oyly Carte Opera Company. It restored a few cuts made early in the opera's original run in the 1880s, though nothing significant. Three bonus tracks are arias cut or recomposed before the original First Night, but frankly, they deserved to go! The digital recording is bright & clear, the choral singing the best I've heard in this opera. The soloists are clearly at home with their characters, & imbue them with personality as well as having...on the whole...excellent voices. I still prefer the old D'Oyly Carte recording from 1964, conducted by Sir Malcolm Sargent, which has better performances of the crucial characters Jack Point, Elsie Maynard & Wilfred Shadbolt, but this is a good second choice.Read full review
