The Mint Boxed Nikon DX Zoom Lens 18-55 AF-S G VR is the original stock lens that comes with the Nikon D3100. Yes others will fit but if you buy the body & lens together this is the lens you get which is an 18 - 55mm zoom lens which will autofocus in Manual or Automatic which means the camera focuses for you. It also has VR ( Vibration Reduction) or camera shake to us older generation. So if you have a bit of the shakes these days or you can't hold that full frame body as still as you used to then this is for you. The VR is selected on the lens body via a small slide switch to engage Manual or Automatic. It is lightweight because the lens body is made from plastic. I hadn't used to like this but they bounce better and don't dent, they don't make the business end of your expensive camera droop or sag when you have been shooting all day. I am now sold on plastic lenses. This lens will fit and work with other Nikon bodies but you need to speak to a dealer or repairer for information. I know it fits mine because I asked first. I'm sure you will find them more helpful than you may think. If you have a Nikon D3100 and have lost your original lens then this one is the direct replacement for it. Recommended. I have been a Nikon fan for ages and I like Nikon lenses. The only reason I give this 4 out of 5 is the 3 cheap plastic lugs instead of the aluminium ones on my older Nikion lenses I have with my 35m/m SLR. This is a replacement on my D5000. I was taking a picture of me car, when My dog went to run in the road, I tried to grab him, nearly missed and got his ear, he got the hump and went to bite me and I twisted my ancle and fell over braking the lense on the camera? This 18-55 gives a good range and crisp pics. I like the VR system as well which lets you shoot in lower light.
I bought this lens with some tepidation. After 37 years of using Nikon kit I was concerned over using a lens with a "plastic" bayonet. However, all seems OK so far. The image is pretty sharp and it works as it should. The focus ring seems very light - but I guess it has to be to avoid putting load on the autofocus mechanism. A lens like this would have cost more in relative terms back in the 70s -that's for sure! Let's see how it stands up.

Nikon quality at the entry level of their lens portfolio. Great versatile lens with the added bonus of vibration reduction. It also closes up to a compact size for easier mobility. Images are as clean and sharp as you could expect at this price point. Very good value. Only slight negative is the plastic feel of the lens.

I bought this lens as a replacement to the one that I got with my camera. Unfortunatly the last one got mildew inside when i accidentally left the camera in a damp corner of a room in my house!! I had a photo shoot of a friends dog with the new lens for some pocket money, and the photos were great, due to the lens being crystal clear. Cheers!!

I bought this lens expecting great things but unfortunately it was (in my opinion) of a poor quality and certainly was no better the the earlier non-stabilised 18-55mm EFS lens as supplied as a kit lens by Nikon. It may have been in part down to the inferior picture quality I found given by the Nikon D3000 I bought with it - the lower resolution D40 is far superior as is it's kit lens!! The VR (anti shake) feature is only needed if you must hold a camera at arms length to take a picture (BAD PRACTICE) if you hold a camera properly to the eye or use a tripod then all this is unnecessary. As I've said before the newer cameras seem to be loaded with features you don't want, and far poorer quality as a result. Higher megapixels DO NOT result in a better picture. Phil
Works well, good focus and easy to use for a decent price. Would say it's the best lens you can buy for a Nikon that's under £100.

Bought this lens for my Nikon D3100 as I managed to drop my camera and the lens shattered . This is the same lens my D3100 came with when I bought it and I find that it's of the same quality and great condition . I mainly use my camera for product photography ( plush toys and pillows) and the clarity and colour and everything is great . Absolutely recommend . And great value too .

This a very nice lens to use and to carry with you. The optical quality is to the best Nikon standards. It is a light weight lens using plastic casing components so don't throw it about and resist the temptation to pick the heavy camera body up by the lens. But then good photographers don't recommend that you do that!

This lens was purchased to compliment another Nikon kit lens in my possesion with the range 55mm -200mm. The two lenses are ideal to cover the full focal range of 18mm -200mm. Both are light in weight very sharp and benefit from incorporating VR (vibration reduction). The only downside was the lens hood supplied with the 18-55mm lens was a screw in type and clipped the corners of the photos. I replaced this with a clip-on type and this solved the problem. I would recommend this lens to anyone wanting a fine general purpose lens giving good quality images.
