Hi there, Since the first test shots I realised that I should have bought it years ago! This is my first professional lens and it is the only one I use since I got it. It is heavy, that's for sure, but I like heavy bodies and lenses. They feel strong and stable but I almost always use a tripod for a good shooting so it is not a big issue to me. I actually got the older model than the photo with one big ring, the push-pull type but all details and lens structure (and quality) are exactly the same. It's auto focus on my D300 is fast and accurate. It is not meant for all users. You need to ask yourself what you need, which range or something light to carry on all day. Although, to me, it's the most recommended lens you can get!!!
I wanted to take my photographing one step further, so i bougt the best camera one can get, the Nikon D800E. For a camera like this, one neads the best lenses ever. So I started looking for a Nikkor 80-200/f2.8 wich is the best lens Nikon ever made. The lens is very difficoult to get in Sweden, but the I finaly won the bidding on Ebay. Now when I had the chans to test the lens I understand why photographers praise this lens so high. It´s SUPERB! One other lens I bougt on Ebay is equaly the best in its class, the Nikkor 50mm/f1.4 AF D. FANTASTIC
Whilst all the new telephoto lenses "progress" with VR for hand held shots, i need a tripod to capture low light shots in live Theatre performance shots so VR is no advantage but the f2.8 is. The results are excellent, capturing movement and sharp close ups; and the price was 1/3 of the new VR equivalent lenses which everyone is upgrading to. I certainly recommend this lens if you use tripod whilst if you use hand held it's worth considering VR (if you've got the money). It's built to last too, I'm sure I'll still have this lens long after all the delicate mechanisms of the VR lenses have failed.
Awesome lens for the right camera (with internal focusing motor) and if anyone tries to mug you you have the answer right in your hands!

This lens is not only a tank, it is razor sharp, it is great value and it will last longer than the newer range of lenses with VR. It also beats them on image quality, hands down. If you need a lens for sports, then obviously, you need the latest faster focusing lenses with VR, but that aside, for people portraits, etc...this is the one you want.
