I bought the Nikon Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED AF-S DX Lens few weeks ago. The lens wasn't very heavy, very long and big. Still perfect to put into my existing camera beg, which was fit for a kit and 18 - 55mm lens. And, this len works pretty well with my Nikon D40x. I tested it with my son in playground. The len is so perfect for potrait. I used it to zoom on my son. The photo output was amazing in-term of outline the object and blur the background. My only complaint is that you can't really use it for every scenerio especially if you are interested to capture a wide background within a limited space. I would recommend the lens if you are interested to shoot something with a given distance. e.g birds in a bird park,.zoo,..etc.
While this lens probably won't allow you to 'stand off' your target to a huge extent for a mid range zoom in reasonable lighting conditions you could do a lot worse. The VR (Vibration Reduction) system seems to work well with hand held shots at the utmost range giving crystal clear results and up to now this system has only being included in considerably more expensive Nikon lenses. Up to the time of writing I haven't noticed any particular distortions at the lenses extreme ranges but I haven't really tried it with fast moving targets / un-ideal lighting conditions so I guess it could come unstuck here. So to summarise, a great deal for a good quality Nixon branded lens. Recommended...
This lens is cheap for what you get, image quality is excellent and the VR works well. The build is a bit "plasticy" and many people have commented that because it has a plastic mount it will not stand up to much rough handling, but I have had it mounted onto several of my Nikon cameras and picked the cameras up by the lens and not treated it with kid gloves at all and it is still working fine. For the price I doubt if you would get a better quality lens with the same specifications and image quality.

Excellent zoom lens, good quality glass, made to Nikon's high standards, not too heavy to carry around. Photos it takes are sharp, VR compensates well for any camera shake, a well priced lens for your Nikon DSLR Camera with this and an 18-55m lens you will have pretty well all that you need

This is a very good lens, gives sharp detail, even at full focal length. Although I prefer the 28-200 for the wide angle aspect, the difference in price makes this a lens well worth having in your collection, even if it does mean carrying that extra lens and changing it for wide angle purposes. But, of course, if you can afford the 18mm - 300mm wide angle zoom, then I would prefer that, IF you have 800 - 900 quid spare !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Although purchased 2nd hand (used) the lens was in new condition and was exactly what I was looking for at a great price. Takes fantastic sharp clear photographs both close up and from a distance. Easy to connect to camera as are all Nikon lenses and well made product. First Class.

I bought this NIKON zoom because I wanted an original suppliment for my D3100 camera. I am not disapointed. It is a very fine objektive and able to shoot very sharp and nice pictures. Regards Per Hildebrandt, Denmark.
I bought 'er indoors a DSLR for Chrimbo. This came with an 18-55mm zoom. I bought this as an extra lens with a bigger capacity. From some of the pictures she has taken I think it may be one of the best purchases I have made. The anti shake is brilliant as she refuses to use a tripod. The definition is excellent as is the resolution. I was hoping to have a go with it myself but cannot pry it out of her hands. May have to break her fingers so I can play. Recommend this lens to anyone.
I bought this 55-200 lens to go with my Nikon D3100 with 18-55 AF-S DX VR kit lens as reviews stated that it was the perfect compliment to get you going with digital photography. Having come back to 'proper' photography after many years of using both film and digital compacts after selling my Olympus OM1 and OM10 with the then standard 50mm lenses. I cannot disagree with the statement that this lens is the perfect partner for the kit lens with the D3100. The lens is light, not too big, and produces pin sharp images. I can't help feeling though that I should have waited and bought the 300mm VR lens as you always feel you could do with that bit more. Having said that I have since bought a Tamron 70-300 non stabilised lens with a macro facility which I am enjoying using. To summarise, this is a good lens and is in my opinion good value for money.Read full review
