About this product

Product Information

This ultra-telephoto zoom lens covers a telephoto range up to 500mm and allows photographers to bring the subject close and short perspective. Sigma's original OS (Optical Stabilizer) function offers the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower. It is ideal for sports, wildlife and landscape photography with handheld shooting. Three SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements provide excellent correction for chromatic aberration. This lens is equipped with a rear focus system that minimizes fluctuation of aberration caused by focusing. The super multi-layer lens coating reduces flare and ghosting. High image quality is assured throughout the entire zoom range. This lens incorporates HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), which ensures a quiet and high-speed AF as well as full-time manual focusing capability.

  • Good quality at its price point

This lens has to be judged in relation to its price. High quality ultra zooms cost many times the price of the Sigma but good images can be obtained, especially at 300mm or below, provided the lens is stopped down to f11 or below, preferably f16. I tested the lens extensively and have concluded that unless one is wanting to print images with the 500mm angle of view at A3+ one is better shooting at 400mm or preferably 300mm and cropping the image. At 300mm I could print an area corresponding to the 500mm view at between A4 and A3 at 180 dpi which is acceptable with my Epson 1400 printer although possibly not for competition. I was surprised to be able to shoot hand held at 500mm with the image stabilisation switched on and produce passable results but that is academic as a lens of this size will invariably be tripod-mounted. I have yet to test it with a monopod. I cannot comment on durability but the lens looks and feels reassuringly solid which is reflected in the avoirdupois department.

  • Excellent lens

The Sigma lens is a heavy weight and really needs a tripod even with OS at full zoom. It produces superb results at all settings and the auto focus is excellent.

  • Keeper!

I'm just a beginner hobby photographer with a desire to get to know how to shoot in manual and work on creating and keeping memories. I added this lens to my collection to be able to shoot my daughters in cross country meets, the eagles in the winter, and learn to photograph birds in general (or subjects from a distance- think county roads and barns/windmills etc...). Even for a beginner like me, this lens is easy to use and gets good results. I am sure, as I learn to become a better photographer, I will be able use the lens to its full potential. Until then, this lens makes me look like I know what I am doing!

  • Great lens but pretty big

Great Lens Note : the Auto Focus on the Nikon D5300 is not compatible with this lens, works great on my D3200 but not D5300. Known issue by Sigma, fixed on the 150-600 lens but no fix for this one.

  • Sigma 150-500

Good lens for the money, was caught out by the fact that it would not autofocus on my Nikon D5300, not something I was aware of despite my research. However, a couple of emails later, posted to Sigma who carried out the neccessary upgrade for free. Now works perfectly

  • Sigma telescopic

It is a monster in size. I have not checked it in plane spotting yet. But can zoom things from the far end of my street.
