This type of camcorder is one of the best from SONY good picture and realy good sound in stereo, and also to take pictures with, so the is a very good camcorder.
I had been looking for one of these older Sony Digital 8 cameras (at the right price)for some time when I finally spotted this little beauty. As with many 40 something Fathers who have raised a happy family through the golden years of the camcorder boom, I have an extensive library of old 8mm and Hi8 video tapes and desperately needed a simple and cost effective method of translating these hours of precious memories into a usable and robust digital format. This unit was absolutely spot on for my requirements, having obviously been owned by a very light user it was in pristine "as new" condition. As one of the higher end models in the Sony line-up of its day the TRV340 is equiped with a host of clever bells and whistles and (most importantly) with the crucial backwards compatability and (the real Sony genius of this range)the ability to digitise the analogue video signal so that it can be easily up-loaded to your computer without the need for any expensive conversion hardware or software!! The deal went well and I got the camera for a price that both the vendor and I were well satisfied with. I picked the unit up from Buxton on one dark wet evening after work. It was a fair old detour to be honest but I wanted to see the unit was exactly as advertised and had offered cash on collection accordingly. Thankfully the seller turned out to be a good honest ebay "diamond geezer" and I happily parted with my wedge before facing the 2 and a half hour battle home through late rush hour darkness. The TRV340 turned out to be a breeze to use and with a straightforward USB connection to the lap-top, I was soon transferring my very earliest (and most precious) original 8mm format tapes of the kids as babies. I had expected some playback issues and was quite frankly gob-smacked by the quality of the pictures and indeed the playback of the converted digital files on the PC. This is obviously helped by the built in time base corrector and, despite the video being recorded on an ancient Canon unit some 20 years ago, the signal was sharp, stable and stands up incredibly well to being viewed on my monster 50" Panasonic plasma panel. All in all another very satisfying and successful forray into ebay and the happy resolution of an important project that has been on my to do list for far far to long!Read full review
