Bit plastic but very good value.

Bit plastic but very good value for occasional DIY use. You really need to make up a stand to mount it on or use is awkward because of chain clearance. In use it will flex a bit but with practice you can make a perfectly acceptable job of sharpening a chainsaw chain. Three chains sharpened and it's paid for itself. Can't argue with that.

    Eee By Gum

Out of the box it needs 'fettling; to use an old Northern English expression, as one would expect from Silverline it's built to a price to put it politely but if you are like me and able to make improvements such as bolting it down to a nice rigid board cut to support the whole base with a slot for the chain (longer bolt needed), stiffen up the wobbly plastic bits, drill an indent in the outer of the two small metal plates to locate the bolt to stop the chain lifting up when clamped, add a metal bracket to make the depth stop a more positive event, it's too easy to nick the chain link plates as the plastic 'stop' flexes if you press too hard. But once all set up it's a brilliant bit of kit, I'm resurrecting old chains in minutes that once I couldn't be bothered to as it would take too long with a hand file.

  • Worth every penny

I was sceptical after reading reviews and spending so little on a machine. Usually cheap means you get tat! I've used 2 screws to secure it to the bench using the holes designed for it. (no modifications as other reviews have said) Only negative is the instruction manual isn't really an instruction manual, more a "how to use common sense" manual, so I did need to watch a YouTube video on how to be sure to use it. But once I'd watched that, it was easy and my blade is so so so sharp now. Only thing I'd say is there is no stop guard, so if you were stupid, you could grind the chain and not the blade. But if you aren't able to not hit the chain but not pressing so hard, you shouldn't really be operating a chainsaw to be honest.

  • Great sharpener

Initially not overly impressed with the plastic bodywork of the tool. Once fitted to a piece of plywood, it had a more stable feel to it. Fitted a batten underneath the plywood to be able to secure in a bench vice. To use this tool without a secure fixing would be stupid. Setting the right position to grind the teeth was a little bit fiddly but once set was easy to use. I took off the minimum amount that I could taking my time. The result was a nicely sharpened chain. Tried out the newly sharpened chain on a couple of hardwood tree stumps and went through with ease. Previous attempts with previously blunt chain were given up on. All in all, a great little machine if used in a proper manner. Take your time and you should be able to do several re-sharpens on a chain.

  • Decent for the money

A decent little tool, the wheel could be thinner, but it sharpened the blade, A bit of play on the clamp, being made from plastic, but once you get used to that it works

  • Good value for money

Not terribly high quality but at this price pretty unbeatable. It certainly sharpened all 3 of my chains very quickly and well. I would recommend it if you are after a good value chain sharpener. Does what it says.

  • Cost effective purchase

With chains costing 12 to 16 pound this is a must have when like me you find a stone has dulled the chain so using it twice has put me in profit.
