  • Korg 01/W *The* Keyboard of the 90's - And Still a Good Performer in the 2010's

Though it may be somewhat dated by today's standards, the Korg 01/W is still a contender for modern performance. The sound library is adequate and can be expanded. You can mold and shape sounds (waveforms, effects, attack, decay, touch sensitivity with activation, after-touch, and a plethora of other settings) as well as combine them and split the keyboard for multi-timbre and effects. While the interface is cumbersome and complicated in some aspects, if you need a keyboard that is versatile (and you're willing to read and learn a *very* big, yet detailed manual) you will find that the Korg 01/W is not just a keyboard with sounds, but a full-blown very deep and intense workstation that can do more that you would expect if you are willing to take the time to get intimate with the deeper capabilities of this masterpiece. It should also be noted the Korg 01/W has relatively large sample sizes (actually larger than the Korg Triton) which gives the sounds a "full" texture, filling the ears and providing even more great sounds with the Combo feature. Old, not obsolete. If you need that 90's sound, this is *the* keyboard you need because this is the keyboard many artists used! Seriously, check out the 01's resume on Wikipedia. I must again emphasize this keyboard can do so much more than just play sounds - If you take the time to learn the 01/W, you can get nearly any sound (or combination) you are looking for if you get into the finer details of the inner depths of this masterpiece of 1990's technology. If you just need a keyboard with sounds, I would not recommend the Korg as it still maintains a relatively high price tag for what it does and can do - and would I hate to see a machine with such potential just make sounds. It's a great time-killer when you get deep into the labyrinth of the 01/W/ While Korg expanded on their model and the Trinity and Triton are an evolution unto themselves, I consider the 01/W the awakening of synthesizers potential in the Korg line.

  • A little learning curve, but a great product

This review is for the USB Floppy Emulator with the OLED Screen for the 01/W. The emulator works GREAT. I just packed all of my floppy disks away in a box, along with the disk drive. It was easy to install, and just fired right up as soon as you turn the power on. It basically tricks your 01/Wfd into thinking its old floppy drive is still there. Because of this, you'll find disk loading times aren't any faster, and the mechanics of saving data onto disks are pretty much the same. It won't change the UI of the 01/W at all, so the only thing you have to get used to is the UI of the flash drive. The flash drive's tiny OLED screen is very easy to read and navigate through the folder/file structure. I recommend to anyone buying this to also use a USB floppy drive to connect to your computer. You can use WinImage to save your physical floppy disks to "virtual hard disk" files that you can then copy to the flash drive. You can create a new directory on the thumb drive "Physical Disks" and put them there. From there, you have your whole library on the card. You can load the image files just as you would a floppy disk from Disk mode, and even save to a blank disk file in the Blank Disks folder. If you do not have a USB Floppy drive (they are cheap, just search them on ebay), you have to load all your disks before you replace the drive, and then initiate a SYSX data dump and save the SYSX files on your computer. Then, after you replace the drive, you can send the SYSX files back to the 01/W and save them to blank disks. I found this process much more confusing than using the USB drive with WinImage. Good luck, this is a necessary upgrade for bringing your old and decrepit 01/W into modern times! That floppy drive won't last forever, and neither will your 720KB DD floppy disks!
